Colonel John Fairfax was a son of William Fairfax by his second wife, Elizabeth Buckner. On the advise of George Washington, John Fairfax decided to, at the age of 25, to "go West and grow up with the country". He purchased of Philip Doddridge some choice lands in the glades of Valley, and settled there around 1790. He was a sheriff of Monongalia County in 1805, and of Preston in 1818. He was also a colonel of militia and a member of State Legislature. The Fairfaxes were wealthy in both realty and slaves.

He married twice. First, to Mary, daughter of Samuel Byrne of Virginia, and secondly to Anne Lloyd, daughter of Francis Boucher Franklin of Maryland.

2) William - b. 1795 and married Elizabeth Sypolt
3) Buckner - b. 1798, d. 1880 and married Rebecca Parsons
4) John - killed in steamboat explosion
5) Mary - b. 1802, d. 1832 and married Aquilla Martin
