Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the 6th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 9, 1861, and was mustered in as a Private in Company E on August 26, 1861. He served in all his regiment's battles and campaigns, and re-enlisted on February 18, 1864. When the veteran enlistments of his regiment expired in the fall of 1864, he was transferred to the 8th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry when the re-enllistees and later recruits of the 6th New Jersey were folded into that unit. Mustered into the 8th New Jersey's Company F, he was promoted to Corporal on September 1, 1864. He saw the war through to it's conclusion, and was honorably mustered out on July 17, 1865.
