The funeral service will be held Saturday April 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Padgett Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Richard Phillips. Burial will follow in Rockfish Memorial Cemetery.
She is survived her husband James Pratt Matthews of the home, 3 daughters, Debra M. Thompson and husband Mike of Watha, Betsy M. Brice and husband Russell of Wallace and Karen M. Snyder of Teachey, 6 grandchildren, Lesley A. Etter of Leland, Michelle Jenkins of Harrells, Tiffany Cole & husband Paul of Pikeville, Anthony Pratt Snyder and Sarah Snyder both of Hampstead and Jonathan Brice of Wallace, 3 great-grandchildren, Gage Jenkins and Cole Jenkins both of Harrells and Briceson Cole of Pikeville.
Born in Burgaw on Oct. 30, 1928, Mrs. Matthews was the youngest of 6 children born to the late Peter and Anna Pinaha Paluck. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Anne P. Whipple and brothers, Steve Paluck, John Paluck, Mike Paluck and Andy Paluck.
Raised in the St. Helena Community she graduated from Burgaw High School in 1947. In 1949 she met and married James Pratt Matthews. Married for 58 years they were also business partners. She was co-owner of Matthews Food Store in Rose Hill for over 30 years , as well as helped maintain the family farm.
A member of Corinth Baptist Church for over 50 years, she held many offices and served as Sunday school teacher.
Second to her family, her yard was her passion which was evident to all who passed by any season to see it vibrant with flowers and foliage.
The family will receive at the funeral home from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Friday and at their residence other times.
The family would like to thank the staff of Davis Health Care Center and Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their efforts to keep her comfortable in her last weeks of life.
Mama, Grandma, Grams thank you for the years of love, learning and laughter. We love and miss you.
