He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Cpl William Savage, Fus Samuel Flint-Broughton and Pte Robert Hetherington were killed when their armoured vehicle struck an improvised explosive device as their patrol travelled along Route 611 between Forward Operating Base Ouellette and Patrol Base Lashkar Gah Durai in the Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province.

Aged 25, Pte Hetherington was raised and educated in Scotland where he achieved a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Geography. During his time at university he became heavily involved in the Officer Training Corps. He enlisted in the Territorial Army (reserves) in October 2006 and was mobilised to join 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland for Operation Herrick 18 in November 2012. Described as a gifted soldier with a genuine natural talent for the profession, he aspired to attend the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst following his deployment. Outside of his Army life, Pte Hetherington represented Scotland at lacrosse and had a passion for music.

Pte Hetherington leaves behind his parents William and June, brothers William and Tom, sisters Annie and Margaret, girlfriend Maeve, relatives and many friends.

A private funeral was held on May 17, 2013 at Canongate Kirk, Edinburgh.
