John was the son of John R. and Mary T. (McDevitt) Hughes. His father was born in Ireland. His mother was born in Delaware. In June 1917 John was a machine hand in the E. I. DuPont de Nemours & Co.'s Poole Shop. John P. A. Hughes and Ethel Wilhelm were married May 4, 1918 in Wilmington, Del. John was a salesman. Private John P. A. Hughes, service number 2943806, served during World War I in France with Company E, 345th Infantry. His death in France on September 16, 1918 was accidental. His sister Gertrude died a few days later in Wilmington, Del. of influenza during the Influenza Pandemic of 1918. His body was returned after the war and buried in Cathedral Cemetery on December 17, 1921. He is in the same burial lot as his mother and father.
