John is the son of Johann J. Aden and Ahltjen Klattenberg and the second oldest of 13 children. He was born in a log cabin in the rural area near Carthage/Bentley, Illinois, Harmony Township. His parents lived there from approx. 1873 to 1883 when they moved to Chatten, Illinois. John is one of 10 living children. Three died in infancy. He married Malvina Ottilie Foerder on 18 October 1906. Some of his children attended the Aden/Klattenberg reunions held each August for 50 years in Macomb, Illinois.
