When Joseph was 4 or 5 years old, the family moved from Callaway County to Texas County, Upton Township, near the city of Success Mo. Joseph's father John was a farmer and Joseph undoubtedly was raised a farmer as well.
Joseph was listed in the 1910 census as 44 years of age and living with his sister Susan C. Hart.
There is no record of Joseph being married or having any children.
Joseph died February 23, 1920 at the age of 53. He died of pneumonia and was attended by J H. Pittman MD from Success Mo. Joseph is listed as being buried in the Rice cemetery in Success Mo. As of this date we can find no record of the existence of a Rice cemetery.
