Fred Alvin Clayton was born in 1899 in Beaverdam township, Cherokee county, NC to Sherman & Corneecy Clayton. The family had a farm. Fred moved to Akron, OH with his brothers, looking for work. The rubber industry was booming in Akron at that time and Fred found a job with one of the major rubber companies.
He returned home to marry Helen Bates in 1923. By 1930 they were with the rubber company in Montebello, CA. When Fed retired, he and Helen came home to Murphy, North Carolina to spend the rest of their lives.
