Peter J. Nicholson, 88, of Rapid City, died Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

He was born on December 5, 1924 to John Percy and Adeline Julia (Forshaw) Nicholson in Lancashire, England. Peter grew up in Trefriu, Wales and began attended boarding school when he was seven years old and after graduating worked for the Land Army until he became old enough to join the Royal Navy, serving as a signal man on the destroyer "Beaufort" in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean Fleet from 1943 until 1946. He was the only young man in his Welsh village to come back alive from the war.

After the war he came to the U.S. in 1947 and in 1950 became a U.S. citizen. Peter worked for his father in New York at the John Nicholson Gallery.

He married Bertha Lake in Old Tappan, New Jersey and moved his family to the Denver area and opened the Peter Nicholson Gallery where he was a fine art and antique dealer. Later, he expanded this with Connoisseur Appraisers where he did insurance appraisals for fine personal property.

On March 2, 1974 he married Patsy Pringle at the Episcopal Cathedral in Denver. With the three daughters she brought into the marriage, they became quite suddenly the parents to five daughters between the ages of 12 and 15! They had their moments, but all five grew up to become wonderful people. Peter and Patsy moved to Rapid City in 1978. He grew tired of retirement and became employed by Pennington Count as Weed and Pest Control Supervisor, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. After ten years, he once more retired and he and Patsy became full-time RVers and, sharing an interest in old Western history, they visited every little and big museum along the Oregon Trail. Later, winters were spent in Casa Grande AZ and summers here in Rapid City. He was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.

He is proceeded in death by a much – loved grandson, Chase Kluth.

He is survived by his wife, Patsy Nicholson, Rapid City, his daughters; Heather Eckels and her husband, Richard, Golden, CO, Holly Nicholson-Kluth and her husband Arlan, Littleton, CO., Sharla Riead and her husband Ken, Independence, Missouri, Mindy Elliot, Rapid City and Nicole Downs and her husband Jeff, Colorado Springs, CO, his twin sister, Adeline Rigby, Queensland, Australia, 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
