Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, he graduated from the US Military Academy in 1829, appointed a Lieutenant of Dragoons and served on the Frontier. With the start of the Civil War, he resigned his commission when Confederate President Jefferson Davis offered him the position as Commissary-General of the Confederacy. He remained at the head of the commissary department for the Confederate Provisional Congress for the entire war. After the war, he engaged in farming until his death.
