Michael Douglas "Doug" Finley-He was a Canadian Senator and was Campaign Director for the Conservative Party of Canada during the 2006 and 2008 federal elections and the party's director of Political Operations. He was described as Prime Minister Stephen Harper's "number two man" responsible for vetting and disciplining candidates and MPs. He was involved with the Scottish National Party and the former Reform and Canadian Alliance parties (which was eventually dissolved into the current Conservative Party). On August 27, 2009, Finley was appointed to the Senate. Upon his appointment the position of National Campaign Director was discontinued, replaced with National Campaign Manager and National Campaign Chair. Finley was married to cabinet minister Diane Finley. Finley died of cancer on May 11, 2013, after a long illness. In his professional life, Finley worked for Rolls Royce Canada, where he rose to the position of Director of Production, Strategic Planning and New Business Development. He then served as President of Standard Aero and Senior Vice President of AvCorp Industries. More recently he worked as General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of Fernlea Flowers in Southwestern Ontario. While working as Campaign Director for the Conservative Party of Canada during the 2006 federal election, Finley,with his colleagues Irving Gerstein, Michael Donison and Susan Kehoe became involved in what is known as the In and Out scandal. Gerstein was also appointed to the Senate in 2009.The Honourable Douglas Finley was the husband of Diane Finley M.P. for over 30 years. Doug was Born in Exeter, UK. His parents quickly moved him to Scotland to ensure that he was "raised properly." Doug attended the universities of Strathclyde, Edinburgh and McGill. He emigrated to Canada in the late 1960s. An avid soccer fan, particularly of Glasgow Celtic and Manchester United, he began his professional career at Rolls-Royce Canada in Montreal, where he quickly rose through the ranks to senior executive levels. He moved on to serve as President of Standard Aero, and Senior Vice President of AvCorp Industries. Later in his career, he worked as General Manager, and Chief Operating Officer of Fernlea Flowers in Southwestern Ontario. In 2003, Doug Finley was appointed Director of Political Operations of the Canadian Alliance by Stephen Harper after running the Perth-Middlesex by-election campaign. After the merger of the two national parties, he became a driving force behind Stephen Harper's successful leadership campaign for the Prime Minister of Canada. In March 2004, Doug Finley was appointed Director of Political Operations of the newly-formed Conservative Party of Canada, and was the engineer behind the 2004 break-through in Ontario for the Conservative Party. He then successfully engineered and led the Conservative Party to victory through the 2006 and 2008 general elections as National Campaign Director. In August 2009, Doug Finley was appointed to the Senate, representing Ontario South Coast. He chose the regional designation of Ontario South Coast to reflect his particular interest in the area of southwestern Ontario along the north shore of Lake Erie. He was a member of numerous international boards and the recipient of many honours including Honourary Lifetime Member of the Ferry Command and the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal. He is survived by his wife Diane; his daughter Siobhan (George Desypris) and three grandchildren, Willem, Erin and Emma; sister Maureen (Dave Todd); brother James (Shu-mei; his father-in-law and mother-in-law John and Muriel Dennis; two nieces and one nephew.
