WILLIAM FRFANCIS RICKARD, of this city, died Friday at the Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore, of leukemia, aged 25.

He was a member of the Merchant Marine during the recent war and distinguished himself, having been awarded the Merchant Marine Distinguished Service Medal, highest award of that service. He won the award while a member of the crew of the S.S. Juan DeFuca. Rickard remained on board the sinking craft in the Leyte-Mindore area and later volunteered to salvage another US ship and helped return her to the US. He also received the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and the Atlantic Pacific and Asiatic Theater ribbons.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hagerstown.

Surviving are his parents, Captain and Mrs. Max Rickard; sisters, Lt. Helen Rickard, USNR, Key West, Fl.; Mrs. Mary Renner, Hagerstown; brothers, Cpl. John Rickard, Air Base, Sherman, Tx; Pv. Alfred Rickard, Camp Breckenridge, Ky; and Augustine, Hagerstown.

A Requeim Mass was held at St. Mary's Catholic Church; interment was in Rest Haven Cemetery; arrangements were by the Suter Funeral Home.
