Mrs. Claus Schmidt Died Suddenly At Fort Calhoun Yesterday
Mrs. Claus Schmidt, about 70, whose husband is seriously ill following a stroke suffered last week-end, dropped dead at 4 p.m. yesterday while walking through the Fort Calhoun baseball park with a friend Mrs. Art Jipp.
Mrs. Schmidt was walking to the post office to mail a letter to her sons at Tekamah, asking them to come to Fort Calhoun to do some of the planting for them due to the father's illness.
Death was ascribed to a heart attack. The body was taken to the Sievers Funeral Home, and services had not been arranged at noon today.
The Fort Calhoun woman is survived by her husband; four sons, Chris, William and Allan, all of Tekamah, and Fred of California; one daughter, Mrs. Kate Saltzmann of Tekamah; two half-brothers, W. H. "Bill" Miller of Blair and Bert Miller of California; and a half-sister, Mrs. Edward E. Smith of Colorado. She was a sister-in-law of E. W. Schmidt, Mrs. J. L. Pounds and Mrs. E. C. Lippincott, all of Blair.

PARENTS (Mary J Thornton's first marriage; Lucy's father)
Parent's marriage: 5/21/1875 BOWLER, GILES THORNTON, MARY JANE 3 56 (Washington County)
I believe that Lucy's father is Giles James Bowler, 127383847, 1844-1928. The 1900 census indicates that Lucy's father was b in Canada, which matches the birth location of this Giles, with mother b in New York. Ironically, the Giles mentioned appears to have remarried to another Mary Jane by 1880.
Note that the 1900 census also indicates that Lucy was then the mother of 4 children with all four still living at that time.
