SPRINGFIELD - Douglas Nelson Whitlock, 24, of Springfield died Monday, May 23, 2005, at St. John's Hospital of injuries sustained in a traffic accident.

He was born July 23, 1980, in Springfield, the son of Mark and Karen Nelson Whitlock.

Mr. Whitlock graduated from Pleasant Plains High School in 1998, attended Greenville College and earned Bachelors of Science in physics and engineering from the University of Illinois in 2003. He was a project engineer at Structural Rubber Products Co.

He was a member of the American Society of Engineers and Illinois Society of Professional Engineers and a lifetime member of Knox Knolls Free Methodist Church, where he served as treasurer, Bible quiz coach and worship leader. He was the Illinois state champion in physics for Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering in 1997 and the national Bible quiz champion for Knox Knolls Free Methodist Church in 1998.

Survivors: parents, Mark and Karen of Springfield; brother, Geoffrey Whitlock of Springfield; grandparents, J.O. and Maxine Whitlock of Springfield and Sam and Doris Nelson of Colorado; two uncles; an aunt; and several cousins.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, Knox Knolls Free Methodist Church, the Revs. Hendrik Smidderks and Herbert Coates officiating. Interment: Shiloh Cemetery, Coffeen.

Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
