John W. Dick, a resident of St. Louis for the past 56 years, was laid to rest in Bellefountaine cemetery on Friday afternoon of last week. He was born at Newarthill, Lanarkshire, on Sept. 26 1850, and came to the United States in 1871, locating at St. Louis. He married to Miss Matilda Bennett Dresser. A daughter, Mary Isabella, was born of this marriage. They both preceded him in death. In 1894 Mr. Dick was married to Miss Gertrude W. Ames, who died on March 10, 1909. Three daughters survive: Gertrude, now Mrs. Philip Neamer, of Little Rock, Arkansas; Mary, now Mrs. Alfred Brown, of Chicago, and Dorothy, now Mrs. F. A. Henninger, Jr., of Johnstown, Pa. There is one granddaughter, Jean Hays, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henninger. After the death of his wife, he was both father and mother to the three little girls. Mr. Dick was a staunch Presbyterian and reared the children in that faith. He was a real Scotsman and loved the people of his native land. For several years he was president of the Caledonian Society; president of the Burns Cottage Association during the World's Fair of 1904 and for many years secretary of the Burns Club. He leaves behind a memory of tenderness, love and courage, which will forever be an inspiration to his children.
