Alexander Johnston was born in Danen County, Ireland. He came to the United States with his parents when he was seven years old. They settled originally in Pennsylvania where Alexander was principally raised. Alexander worked as a weaver of fancy articles. He later moved to Madison County, Ohio where he was engaged in farming. He met and married Susan Oller in Delaware County, Ohio. Susan was born in Bellepoint, Delaware County, Ohio the daughter of John Oller and Catherine Hess Oller. In 1854 Alexander and his family moved to Christian County, Illinois where he became the owner of three hundred and twenty acres of land, which he operated quite successfully up to the time of his death in 1872.
