Married to Alonzo Winston in 1875. He died in 1876. They had one daughter, Lonnie, born a few days before Alonzo's death.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Laura A Winston

Funeral services over the remains of Mrs. Laura A. Winston were conducted this morning at 8 o'clock at the Hanes Funeral home. They were in charge of Rev. Kirby V. Bowen, pastor of the Ashboro Street Friends Church of which the deceased was a devoted member. A large number of friends and relatives were present to pay their last respects to one who has been tenderly loved through a long life of service to those about her. The remains were taken to Raleigh on the 9:20 o'clock train where a short burial service was conducted at the grave in Oakwood Cemetery. Mrs. Winstons rests beside her long deceased husband and only daughter.

She was born at Guilford , the eldest daughter of Yancy and Naomi Corrin Ballinger. She attended New Garden school now Guilford College then taught in the school for the Deaf Dumb, and Blind at Raleigh. She married Alonzo Winston at Raleigh. Shortly after she went to Mexico as a missionary assisting her sister, Miss Julia Ballinger who conducted a Friends' Missionary school at Matamoras.

After returning to North Carolina, she was elected lady principal of the School for the Deaf and Dumb at Morganton. Her daughter had died between the time she returned from Mexico and went the Morganton institute. She was a prolific writer of matter pertaining to religion , temperance, and travel. She edited The Deaf Carolinian at Morganton.

She represented North Carolina at the world's Sunday School convention at Jerusalem in 1896 and was elected vice-president of the convention, the first time the honor was accorded to a woman. She was one of the leaders in establishing the Woman's Temperance union in North Carolina.
She leaves two sisters, Miss Julia Ballinger of El Paso , Texas and Miss Dora Ballinger and several nephews and nieces
