1919 - 2013 NAPLES, FLA. E. James, "Jim" Roberts II, longtime Brattleboro businessman and former Vermont Avenue resident, died peacefully May 9, 2013, at The Cove at the Marbella in Naples following a brief illness. With his wife, he had been a full-time resident of Naples since 1984.

He was born at home in Jacksonville, Vt., on July 19, 1919 the son of Raymond and Caroline (Begeibing) Roberts. Raised and educated in Jacksonville, he was a graduate of Jacksonville High School and joked that he was in the top ten of his class, (there were only ten students in his high school class; he was actually second).

Mr. Roberts went on to attend the University of Vermont in Burlington, graduating in 1940 with a Bachelors Degree in Engineering. He proudly displayed that fact on his license plate-UVM 40.

While attending college, he met the love of his life, Dorothy McCormick. The couple dated for four years and were married while he was serving in the Army. In 2012, they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Following college, he worked at a gas company in Brooklyn, N.Y., for a short time prior to enlisting in the Army. A proud veteran of World War II, he was stationed in Germany and later in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operation during the War and was honorably discharged from active service at the rank of Captain.

In 1945, just before he was discharged, Dorothy gave birth to their son E.J. Roberts, III. The couple settled in Brattleboro where he established a business selling trailers to area farmers. The business expanded to selling trailers, mobile homes and later modular homes.

In 1954, his father's auto dealership, R.S. Roberts of Brattleboro suffered a major fire and soon after he went to work at the dealership as the general manager while his wife continued to operate the mobile home business.

Mr. Roberts also partnered to establish Central Parts with offices in Brattleboro, Bellows Falls and St. Albans, plus started R&M Supplies, a body shop supplier with offices in Brattleboro and Glens Falls, N.Y. In 1969, his son, E J, joined the mobile home business which he continued to operate along with his mother, Dorothy, for many years.

Civically, he was active in the Brattleboro Kiwanis Club of which he was a past president. He was an active member of the Brattleboro Chamber of Commerce from 1946 until the mid 1980's. Mr. Roberts was instrumental with the formation and early years of the BDCC (Brattleboro Development Credit Corp), a driving force in local business financing serving a period as president of the group.

In the early 1960's, he was honored as the Chamber Man of the Year. Additionally he was an active director of the First Vermont Bank for 35 years.

Mr. Roberts retired in the late 1980's but continued to manage his numerous real estate properties from his home in Naples.

Throughout his lifetime, he had a passion for golf and played often, winning many rounds including two holes-in-one. His love for golf continued and he played regularly as recently as March of 2013.

Survivors include his faithful and loving wife of 70 years, Dorothy, of Naples; son E.J Roberts and wife, Marty, of Vernon, Vt.; two granddaughters, Diana Puffer and husband, Keith, and great- grandchildren, Keagan and Caroline of Duxbury, Vt., and Wendi Matusic and husband, Greg, and great-grandson, Jake, of Albany, N.Y., and one brother, William "Bill" Roberts and wife, Marguerite, of Hinsdale, N.H. Additionally, he leaves many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard "Dick" Roberts and Oscar "Doc" Roberts.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A Memorial Service in celebration of his life will be conducted Sunday, June 2, at 2 p.m. at Centre Congregational Church on Main Street, Brattleboro, with the Rev. Carra McFadden, pastor, officiating. A reception will follow the services in the church's fellowship hall.

Interment will be in the family lot in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery on Orchard Street Brattleboro, at a future date.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home.
