Robert A. McDonough was born on 10 August
1924 in Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts,
the son of John F. and May W. McDonough.

He graduated from High School, and enlisted
in the U.S. Army Air Corps on 09 December
1942. He was sent to gunnery school for
training, and was then assigned to the 8th
Air Force; 305th Bombardment Group; 365th
Bombardment Squadron, stationed in CHELVESTON,
ENGLAND, and was an aerial tailgunner on
board B-17 Flying Fortress Heavy Bomber
Aircraft. He attained the rank of Sergeant.

On 09 August 1944, during a Bombing Mission,
over Karlsruhe, Germany, his B-17, serial
number, 42-102962, (Missing Air Crew Report
Number: 8066), was severely damaged by
German Fighters. The crew bailed out of the
bomber.

Sgt. Robert A. McDonough had parachuted to
earth and landed on a hill in the village
of Weisenbach. Three villagers found the
wounded Sgt. Robert A. McDonough under a
bush and started to carry him down the hill.
All of the flyers had surrendered, and
according to international law, should have
been treated as Prisoners of War by the
civilians who were at the scene, However,
they were interrupted by another villager,
Adolf Eiermann, who ordered them to beat
the airman, later identified as Sgt. Robert
A. McDonough.

Sgt. Robert A. McDonough was murdered by
the Civilians of Weisenbach. Two other of
his crew members were also murdered by
the Villagers. Several other of his
crewmen were held as Prisoners of War.

Many of those Villagers were later tried
and convicted of War Crimes, including
the Murder of Sgt. McDonough, but most
had their sentences overturned or commuted,
and were released from prison within 10
years, with the exception of four men,
one of them being Adolf Eiermann, who
was executed by hanging.

The Villagers had crudely buried their
murder victims, but they were later exhumed
from their primitive burial place and given a
proper burial in the Village cemetery.

After the War, the remains of Sgt. Robert
A. McDonough, were returned to the U.S.
and he was buried in Brookdale Cemetery
in Dedham, Norfolk Co. Massachusetts.

He was survived by his parents, John F.
and May W. McDonough, his brothers,
John F.; Thomas W.; and Richard; and
by his sisters, Elizabeth and Ruth C.
McDonough.
