Funeral Held For Oldest Resident
Sandersville lost its oldest and one of its best-loved citizens on Friday of last week by the death of Mrs. Virgil Stewart Joyner at the advanced age of 95 years.
A descendant of Colonial Georgia and Virginia families, the deceased was possessed of unusual mental ability and sustained throughout a long life an unblemished Christian character.
Just after the War Between the States, she was married to Captain Virgil Stewart Joyner who died in 1889.
A service of great beauty and simplicity was held at the Christian church in Sandersville by the Rev. E.G. Orahood, with two lovely and touching solos "in the Garden" and "Sunrise Tomorrow" by Curtis Hayes of Macon.
Active pall bearers were A.W. Smith, Will Armstrong, C.F. Irwin, Harper Tucker, Joe Rich Smith and Newsom Summerlin.
Honorary pall bearers were C.D. Shelnutt, Dr. A.J. Irwin, E.W. Jordan, G.J. Elkins, J.L. Wilkerson, C.W. Rawlings, T.N. Smith, Dr. O.L. Rogers, Herman Bashinsky, C.B. Cooley, T.A. Wicker, John R. Irwin, Newman Wood, R.S. Harrell, and G.S. Garbutt, Sr.
The deceased is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Byrd Lovett of Sandersville, Mrs. R.L. Miller of Waynesboro, and Mrs. H.B. Allen of Augusta, two granddaughters, Mrs. Oscar T. Adams and Mrs. George E. Kiker of Augusta, and one great grandson, George Edward Kiker, Jr. of Augusta.
