In 1870 a young woman opened a little school in Tennille. Many of the older citizens recall with pleasure Miss Maria Brookins Haynes, one of the best primary teachers in Georgia. She was reared in Sandersville, and when Messrs. Duggan and Lawson opened their school in the latter place, she began teaching them and taught the boys and girls of the county their "a,b,c's." She went into the Public School when it was organized in 1880 and taught there for more than a quarter of a century.
