He was born August 20, 1930, in Louisville, Kentucky, the son of Paul and Mary Margaret Fowler Mattingly.
Surviving are his wife, Jean E. Minks Mattingly; two brothers, John Thomas (Amy) Mattingly and Dr. William Joseph (Vicki) Mattingly; two sisters, Elsie Jane Cone and Ruth Ann Saunders; sister-in-law, Pat Mattingly; stepbrothers, Jack, Dr. Mike and Phil Real and stepsisters, Dr. Peg, Dr. Cathleen and Martha Real.
Dr. Mattingly was a 1948 graduate of Wyoming High School, where he was captain of the football team and homecoming king. In 1954 he graduated from Western Illinois Teachers College (Macomb) with a bachelor's degree in 1956 from the University of Missouri with a master's degree and in August 1961 from Penn State with a doctorate, specializing in geography.
He went on to serve his country in the Air Force, and was honorably discharged.
