Carl Herron

Our precious father and hero, Carl Herron, of Country Road Estates, Shady Spring, W.Va., formerly of Eccles, W.Va., passed away on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012, at home due to a short illness. Carl was born on July 30, 1927, in Eccles to the late Mack and Ella Brewer Herron.

He was preceded in death by his precious wife of nearly 60 years Sylvia Dickens Herron on November 18, 2005, and his oldest son Roger Lee preceded him in death on November 23, 2010. Also preceding him in death two sisters Ruth Harvey and Geneva Herron, five brothers Grover, Hubert, Raymond, Kenneth and an infant brother Elmer.

Carl loved the Pittsburgh Steelers, NY Yankees, Nascar, knife collecting and coal mining. He spent nearly 42 years in the mines having last worked for Westmoreland's Eccles # 5 and # 6. He was given the name Big Chew and it fondly followed him through the years. In his younger years he enjoyed playing baseball, coaching and was an avid hunter. He enjoyed flea marketing and he never met a stranger. Carl was so proud of his family and their accomplishments. He loved to mine coal with the "miners" in the family.

He leaves behind three daughters and one son. Patricia Pena of Fayetteville, James Herron and wife Linda of Eccles, Sharon Smith and her husband Jimmy of Shady Spring and Teresa Webb and her husband Kevin of Glen Daniel. His daughter in law, Dreama Herron of Riverside, Ohio. Carl loved his daughter in law and sons in laws as if they were his own children. Eleven grandchildren: Michael Herron, Tami McGraw, Sean Pena, Kellie Stafford and her husband Jason, Eric Herron and his wife Tracey, Laura Bilbrey, Debbie Covey and her husband Bryant, Jamie Rhyan and her husband Dustin, Jimmy Smith and his wife Detra, Amanda Fraley and her husband Adam and Kevin Carl Webb and wife Erika. Fifteen great grandchildren and the sixteenth arriving in June, and one great great grandchild. One brother, Buddy and his wife Ruth of Columbus, Ohio, Also left behind are several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with Bro. Delmas Cox officiating on Thursday, Dec. 27 at 1 p.m. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, December 26, 2012. He will be laid to rest beside of the beloved wife at Sunset Memorial Park. The family wishes to thank Mary Collins for the love and compassionate care that she provided to our dear father. We also wish to thank the Angels from Hospice.

In Lieu of flowers the family requests that you make a donation to Hospice of Southern West Virginia, 454 Cranberry Dr,. Beckley, WV 25801.

Pallbearers will be Oral Plumley, Alan Lucas, Michael Collins, Jay Sellards, Michael Hylton and Jerry Braskey.
