DS shared: The lovely 2-story brick home where William Overton Watkins and wife Ann (Beets) once lived in Rockbridge County, Virginia, was still standing as of the summer of 2012. It is called the Broad Creek Homestead, located on Plank Road, Natural Bridge District, Rockbridge County, Virginia. It is speculated the house was probably built before 1800. The original owners are unknown. The Watkins family purchased the home and lived there for many years. Ann Beets was the daughter of Adam Beets and Mary Polly Rowlison. The Watkins and Rowlison farms were next to each other on an old map. Adam Beets was the son of George Beets who was born in 1740. Ann (Beets) Watkins and other family members were buried on this property. William is buried at Broad Creek Cemetery which is close to this property. Photos were taken of this home in 2012, but the owners of these photos asked that they not be published. The home is quite beautiful and impressive and appears to sit alone on quite a bit of land, although it is overgrown and wooded in back. It is presently not occupied and is in the possession of heirs of the last owner (unrelated to the families mentioned here) who are trying to decide what to do with it. It certainly looks like it could be a wonderful home if someone restored it. The following information was added by Ruby Leighton on March 15, 2013: This Watkins homestead was built by Stephen Arnold in about 1770 for one of his sons, who lived there about 10 years. The next owner was probably a Beets. Later William Overton Watkins and wife Anny Beets (a Rowlison heir) lived there. After the Watkins lived on the homestead, it was bought by the Peery family, lived in by the daughter Lillian (Peery) Myers, later sold to the Perkins family, whose heirs still own the home and part of the land. The Nathaniel Rowlison farm was next door, whose dau Mary Polly Rowlison married Adam Beets, father to Ann Beets, who married William Overton Watkins. -- Form Ruby Leighton, Rockbridge County, Virginia, gg-granddaughter of Wm. Overton Watkins and Anny (Beets) Watkins. (From DS).
