His love for life near the water ran deep in his heart and so he applied for law enforcement training with the NC Marine Fisheries and was accepted. He requested duty in Carteret County because of the wonderful childhood memories he had of summers spent visiting friends in Davis, NC. Robert and Barbara moved to Beaufort with their daughter, Dianne, in 1964. He worked as an inspector for a few years before transferring to Maintenance and Supply. He retired as Maintenance and Supply Supervisor after over 37 years service with the State.
He greatly enjoyed being on the water either fishing, shrimping or clamming. As long as his health permitted he enjoyed building and remodeling his own boats. He was a life long learner which was evident by the constant stack of books and magazines beside his chair. He enjoyed traveling up and down the east coast for vacations but eventually found the quiet mountains of Ashe County to be his favorite place to relax. After retiring, Robert and Barbara bought a cabin in Grassy Creek, NC. There he was able to hunt, take day trips to explore the mountains and even relive his youth by having a horse once again. Both Robert and Barbara enjoyed being there as much as possible.
In his younger years, Robert served as a Sunday school teacher and ordained deacon in church. At the time of his passing he was a member of First Baptist Church of Beaufort.
