Sharon Bloom, 37, was working for the 3M Corporation as a computer database manager when she left the Woodbury, Minnesota office on Nov. 2, 1989, two days before her 38th birthday.

Ten days later, on November 12, 1989, a farmer found Bloom's partially clad body in a cornfield in Rice County, about halfway between the cities of Northfield and Faribault, Minnesota. Bloom had been bludgeoned to death and appeared to have been the victim of a sexual assault.

In 1995, Stephan J. Zanter, Bloom's former co-worker, pleaded guilty to second-degree intentional murder, capping a long legal process in which he was indicted once, let go because evidence was tossed out, then charged again after new DNA tests linked him to the crime.

Zanter, 47, of Apple Valley spoke calmly in Rice County District Court in Faribault, admitting that he took Bloom to his home in Eagan that day in 1989. He said he got upset after they had a confrontation regarding Sharon getting chosen for a promotion over him, picked up a hammer and started hitting her in the head with it. He said he "just couldn't stop."

It took 13 years for Sharon's killer to be brought to justice.

Cause of Death: Blunt force trauma to the head.
