Bettie married Captain Richard Allison Torrance, November 26, 1857, in North Carolina. Following the birth of their first daughter Minna, they made the long trip from North Carolina to Fort Bend County, Texas where they received a land grant and begin farming.

Their second daughter, Margaret was born in 1859, near Richmond, Fort Bend Co., Texas. Bette died two years later in 1861, leaving Richard with two young daughters and the Civil War beginning in the East.

Richard took his two young daughters back to South Carolina and in 1865 married his 2nd wife, Patience Eliza Gaston.
