Melba McElwain Penrose Hunt, 84, died Thursday, June 28, 2012.

Mrs. Hunt was born in Tallahassee on August 11, 1927. She grew up on Hayes Street off of Park Avenue.

Melba graduated from Leon High in 1945 where she was in the Glee Club, Melodears and on the High Life Staff among many other clubs. She graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in Journalism.

She retired from the State of Florida after her career at the Florida Board of Regents and later the State Department of Education where she was editor of the DOE newsletter for many years.

She was a member of East Hill Baptist Church. She volunteered at Capital Regional Medical Center for more than 20 years.

She gave many years of public service including; March of Dimes, Easter Seals, even as a "Gray Lady" in the clinics at Kate Sullivan Elementary and Cobb Junior High in the 1960's. She was President of the Board of Directors of the DOE Credit Union and was very involved with the Sweet Adeline Group.

Graveside service will be held 4:00 pm Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at Oakland Cemetery. A reception will follow in the Social Hall at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, 1737 Riggins Road.
