Earl "George" Downer, 90, Treasure Lake, DuBois, died Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at the DuBois Nursing Home.
Born Jan. 11, 1923 in Ralphton (Somerset Co. PA), he was the son of the late George William Downer and Nora Shields Rafferty Downer. He was married to Oreta R. Peters on Jan. 6, 1945 at St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church. She survives.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He later served as an Army Reservist in "C" Battery 92nd Artillery until 1966.
George worked for many years in the family business "Twin Oaks". He also did swimming pool sales and design for National Pools in Alexandria, Va., until his retirement.
He was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, the George D. Montgomery American Legion Post 17, the James J. Patterson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 813, the Loyal Order of the Ruptured Ducks, the Treasure Lake Lions Club, and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 65 Unknown Soldiers.
George is survived by four children: E. George Downer Jr. and his wife, Carol of DuBois, Oreta Catherine Pierce and her husband, Daniel of Woodbridge, Va., James W. Downer of Wilmington, N.C., and Ricky F. Downer of Springfield, Va., seven grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
He was also preceded in death by his twin, Pearle Null and a stepbrother, Lewis McDermott.
