COPELAND, ELIZABETH CATHERINE STEPHENSON (BETTY) - passed away June 9, 2003 following a courageous battle against cancer. Betty was born at Fort Monroe, Virginia on November 1, 1924. She grew up in Hampton, Virginia and attended The College of Hampton Roads. She and First Lt. E.B. Copeland were married February 3, 1945 in The Church of The Centurion, Fort Monroe, Virginia. Betty and E.B. moved to Knoxville in 1953 and Betty became very active in community affairs. She served as a Girl Scout Leader and was President of Akima Club. She was on the board of Knoxville Symphony Society, United Way and The American Red Cross. She also participated and held office in APTA, International Order of King's Daughters and Dogwood Art Festival, in addition to belonging to Blount Mansion Association, Cherokee Garden Club and Daughters of the American Revolution. Betty served in many capacities as part of the women of The Church of First Presbyterian Church and was a member of The Fort Sanders Hospital Auxiliary. Her hobbies included golf, bridge and bowling. Recently she was honored by The Cherokee Country Club Bowling Group and The Cherokee Board of Directors with The Betty Copeland Award, which will be awarded annually to the most improved bowler at Cherokee. Betty was a joyful and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend and will be terribly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul W. and Sarah Stephenson. She is survived by husband of 58 years, E.B. Copeland daughter, Catherine Ann Copeland daughters and sons-in-law, Sarah Elizabeth and Charles H. Pennington, Cynthia Louise and The Reverend Dr. G. Carswell Hughs grandsons, Charles H. (Chip) Penington and James Copeland Pennington three step-grandchildren three step-great-grandchildren and a niece and nephew. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Betty will be held at First Presbyterian Church Knoxville at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2003 with Dr. G. Carswell Hughs, Dr. Paul Rader and The Rev. Wendy Neff officiating. Memorials may be made to The First Presbyterian Church Columbarium, 620 State St., Knoxville, TN 37902 or to The Thompson Cancer Survival Center, 1915 White Ave., Knoxville, TN 37916 or to St. Mary's Residential Hospice, 7447 Andersonville Pike, Knoxville, TN 37938. Friends will be received in The Fellowship Hall immediately following the memorial service. Arrangements by Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel.
