Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. A native of Tennessee, at age nineteen he enlisted in the 2nd Mississippi Regiment and served in the Mexican War. By the start of the Civil War, he was a Baptist preacher when he organized the 32nd Mississippi and was elected Colonel. He led his regiment at the Battle of Shiloh, Chattanooga, Battle of Perryville, Battle of Missionary Ridge and was promoted Brigadier General in October, 1863. For the remainder of the war, he commanded a divisions in Confederate General Cleburne and Cheatham's corps until the surrender in April, 1865. After the war, he settled in Tippah County, Mississippi and resumed regular engagements as a minister of the gospel.
