ELKVILLE - Edward G. "Ed" Humphreys, 93, passed away at 10:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5, 2013, in Metropolis Rehab and Care Center with his loving family at his side.

Ed was born Oct. 2, 1919, in Jackson County to Oren G. and Mina (Grizzell) Humphreys. He married Annabelle Downen June 15, 1947, in Kirksville, Mo., and she preceded him in death April 9, 2000.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Larry Glasco of Metropolis, Linda and Howard Scott of Jefferson City, Mo., and Susan and Doug Cage of Hobbs, N.M.; son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Sondra Humphreys of Benton; seven grandchildren; one stepgrandson; eight great-grandchildren and three great-stepgrandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Bette Humphreys of Elkville; sister-in-law, Ruth Downen of Lady Lake, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Matthew Glasco; stepgrandson, Matthew Scott; and three brothers, Loren, Tom and Ray Humphreys and their wives.

Mr. Humphreys was a member, elder and Sunday school teacher at First Christian Church in Royalton. He was a World War II veteran, who served in the U.S. Coast Guard, and a member of the American Legion in Hurst.

He worked for IC Railroad and, in 1967, he began work at Old Ben No. 26 Mine in Sesser as an electrician. He also was a member of IBEW and UMWA.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 9, in First Christian Church in Royalton with his son-in-law, Howard Scott, officiating. Burial will be in Miners Cemetery, east of Royalton, with military graveside rites courtesy of Zeigler and Orient American Legions, West Frankfort VFW and Marion National Guard Flag Detail. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, and 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Humphreys are suggested to Southern Illinois Christian Services Camp, P.O. Box 69, West Frankfort, IL 62896.
