From the Omaha World Herald Newspaper:
Monsignor James Cain, a retired priest and former chancellor of the Archdiocese of Omaha, died Tuesday at age 82.

Archbishop George J. Lucas will preside Saturday at the funeral Mass at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, where Cain served as pastor for 12 years. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Cain was chancellor from 1969 to 1981 and helped implement the changes of Vatican II in the archdiocese, said Monsignor James Gilg, superintendent of Catholic schools, who lived with Cain for four years at St. Wenceslaus.

In 1981, Cain was appointed vicar general, and he was assigned to build the new St. Wenceslaus Church in southwest Omaha.

He was pastor at St. Wenceslaus from 1981 to 1995, then served as pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Springfield, Neb., until he retired in 2002 and moved to St. John Vianney Residence in Omaha.

He received the title of monsignor in 2003.

A native of Elgin, Neb., Cain studied for the priesthood at Conception Seminary in Conception, Mo., and St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul, Minn.

Ordained in 1956, his first assignment was assistant pastor at St. Cecilia Cathedral in Omaha, where he served for five years.

After an assignment at then-Kearney State Hospital, he spent three years in graduate study in Rome and received a doctorate in canon law.

In 1965, he was named secretary to the archdiocesan marriage tribunal, and in 1967 was appointed vice chancellor, vicar for religious and defender of the bond.

Cain also was a pro-synodal judge and served on the Archdiocesan College of Consulters and the Metropolitan Tribunal.
