SHERD McCLELLAN Was Well Known
William Sheridan McClellan of Alton, was born to Perry and Harriet McClellan at New Lexington, Ohio, on Feb. 27, 1868.
His death occurred Saturday evening, Sept. 6, 1947, at the Beloit Community hospital. He was 79 years of age. Mr.McClellan had been in failing health for some years, due to a chronic digestive disturbance complicated by a heart ailment.
A short time before his death, he had become acutely ill and it had been hoped that hospitalization and surgical treatment would partially restore and improve his health.
Mr. McClellan was among Alton's oldest citizens and in point of time in residence shared only with his neighbor, Fred Hill, the distinction of having lived continuously in one home for several more than fifty years. With his parents, he had moved to Troy, Kansas, in very early boyhood, and some time later the family came to Osborne county homesteading on Little Medicine Creek. By the time he was grown, he and his family were living in Alton and all the years since, it had been his home.
He was married to Elma Broyles on Nov. 15, 1888, his bride being a daughter of another pioneering family.
In their early married life, the couple moved into the house which remained Mr. McClellan's home until the time of his death.
In this house, all but two of the six children were born. All grew up and lived in it until they left or homes of their own. Since Mrs. McClellan's death early in 1933, the youngest daughter, Mrs. Wayne Elliott and Mr. Elliott have shared the home with Mr. McClellan, so that at no time has there been a complete break in his home life. Long and familiarly known as "Sherd" to residents of Alton and surrounding communities, it will learn for the first time that formally, he was William Sheridan McClellan.
Mr. McClellan engaged in various business enterprises during his active years. For a long period in his early life, he operated one of those now almost extinct institutions, a livery stable and barn. Sherd was a man of restless energy.
After old age and infirmities forced him to give up business activities, he devoted his time to his hobby -- gardening. He raised fine gardens and took great pride not only in the vegetables produced, but in the beautifully neat rows of growing plants, their symmetry unmarred by weeds.
