Charles Llewellyn Peers, 89, of Mars Hill, passed away Friday, May 29, 2009, at The Aroostook Medical Center, Presque Isle. He was born Feb. 25, 1920, in Caswell, the son of John and Effie (O'Neal) Peers.

Charles was a decorated veteran of World War II, having volunteered as an original member of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division. He served in North Africa and the entire European Theater.

While stationed in England, he met and married Elizabeth "Betty" Wilson, a native of Scotland, in Leicester City. They celebrated 64 years of marriage Sept. 30, 2008. After the war Charles and Betty settled in Mars Hill, where they raised their family.

Charles was a potato farmer for 30 years, after which time he was employed at Loring Air Force Base as a civilian, retiring in 1985. Throughout his life Charles was an avid horseman. In retirement years, Charles and Betty founded Charbet Farm, raising and racing standard bred horses.

In addition to his parents, Charles was predeceased by three brothers, Abel, John and Calvin; and two sisters, Ameletta "Sis" Kennedy and Faye Michaud.

A military committal will be at Peers Cemetery, Caswell.
