John T. "Jack" Selzer, 83, of Scottsbluff, died peacefully Nov. 24, 2009, at the Residency Care Center in Scottsbluff.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at the Residency in Scottsbluff. Jack was born Oct. 18, 1926, in Scottsbluff, to Milton "Mike" and Dorothy (Lawrence) Selzer. He graduated from Scottsbluff High School in 1944. He served his country during World War II with the United States Navy Air Corps from 1944 until 1946. Jack graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1949 with a B.S. in business administration where he was a member of the "N" Club, the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, Innocents Society (Senior Men's Honorary), and was a football letterman.
On Dec. 17, 1950, he married Shirley Allen in Tecumseh. They lived in Alliance until 1952 when they moved to Scottsbluff. He was associated with the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Scottsbluff (a family business) from 1949 until 1961. In 1961, he went to work for the Scottsbluff National Bank where he eventually served as president and chairman of the board. Jack retired from Scottsbluff National Bank in 1991. Throughout his banking career he was very active in the Nebraska Bankers Association serving on various boards and committees. He also served as director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City (Omaha Branch) from 1986 until 1992. Jack was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry. He also served as president of the Scottsbluff Development Corp., president of the Twin Cities Development Corp., president of the Scottsbluff-Gering Rotary Club, and president of the Scottsbluff YMCA. Jack held various offices and served on the boards of the Regional West Medical Center, the University of Nebraska Foundation, the Nebraska Alumni Association, the Scotts Bluff Country Club, and the Chamber of Commerce. He received the Trailblazer Award from the Chamber of Commerce in 1989.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Selzer of Scottsbluff; sons John Selzer and his wife Ann of Scottsbluff, and Stephen Selzer and his wife Elisabeth of Denver; grandchildren Jane (Chris) Kelley and John (Jamie) Selzer of Scottsbluff, and Michael, Samantha and Joe Selzer of Denver; and great-grandchildren Anna Kelley, Nate Kelley and Elliot Selzer of Scottsbluff. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers James Selzer and Michael Selzer.
