Mary was born in Barnstable, MA to George Augustus and Martha (Bingham) King. Information about her early years is unknown but obviously she was a good student from a prominent family since she graduated from Vassar College, class of 1882.

She also was a direct descendant of William Brewster of the "Mayflower".

Mary married Professor Howard Babbitt in 1891 and had three children. Their third child Charles died at age five.

Mary died at age 51 in New York City and was buried at the Babbitt family plot in Bridgewater Center Cemetery, Bridgewater, CT.

Her death was a terrible accident. She was asphyxiated from a faulty gas heater in the bedroom of her sisters NYC apartment while preparing her notes for a college lecture series. At the time, her husband was having a holiday in Bridgewater, CT.

He never really recovered from all the tragic events that took place in his family, although did continue to do translations of ancient languages until his death some years later.
