Dorothy Bernice (Ahlquist) Bell passed away early Wednesday morning, April 24, 2013, at the age of 95, a long time patient at the Pine Point Nursing Center in Scarborough. Dorothy was born in Scarborough on the 5th of Feb. 1918, the daughter of Martin A. B. and Sophia Mae (Berry) Ahlquist. She graduated from Scarborough High School in 1934 and attended Maine School of Commerce in Portland until 1935. She married Alfred Reid Bell on the 3rd of June in 1939.
Dorothy worked in several places in the area but her long-term employment was at Cascade Inn in Saco where she worked for 35 seasons. She loved to sew, cook and read. As her girls grew, Dot crafted most of their school clothes, but also designed and sewed their more formal gowns as well as one of her daughter's wedding gown and all the bridesmaid's dresses. With so many mouths to feed, she cooked endlessly and loved doing it. She was always trying new recipes. In the mornings, she could be found in her kitchen reading the Portland Press Herald and doing the crossword puzzle. She was also an avid novel reader, reading novels of all types. In her retirement years, Dorothy developed painting skills and her paintings are coveted by her children and are currently hanging in their homes. During these years, she gained great joy from her dog and cat, Tinkerbell and Suki.
Alfred, her husband of 73 years is now 96 and resides in the home he built for his wife and family in Scarborough in 1948. Dorothy and Alfred had four children, Bruce Alfred Bell, Scarborough, Jack Lloyd Bell, Dennistown, Linda Bell Ryder, Owings, Md., and Joleen Bell Conner, Scarborough, and also Jacquelyn Manchester Brown, who came to live with them as a young girl. Jackie, who lived in Rangeley, passed away last December. Dorothy is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank all the compassionate and concerned employees at the Pine Point Nursing Center for their dedicated care during the final years while Dorothy was dealing with the effects of Parkinson's Disease.
Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 US Route 1, Scarborough, ME, is assisting the family with arrangements. Visiting hours are set for Saturday, May 4th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 12 p.m., at the funeral home.
