CAPE CORAL, Florida -- Emma Jean Borgstadt, 79, of Punta Gorda, Florida, formerly of Davenport, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2013 at Cape Coral Hospital.

Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 10, 2013, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2136 Brady Street in Davenport. Burial will take place in Oakdale Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2013, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly and Jersey Ridge in Davenport. Memorials may be made to Lutheran World Relief or ELCA World Hunger.

Emma was born in 1934 in Oakville, to Lloyd and Emma Orr. She was united in marriage to Charles Borgstadt on August 12, 1955, in Muscatine. He preceded her in death on November 30, 1993.

Emma obtained her BA from the former Marycrest College and a Master's Degree from Truman State University. She was an English teacher and counselor for 44 years in the Davenport Junior and Senior High Schools. She was a member of the Davenport Retired Teachers Association, West High and North High Teachers Association, the I.S.E.A., D.E.A, and N.E.A. She also served on the IRIS (Iowa's Rapidly Improving Schools) state committee that works with curriculum.

In retirement she was active in the Punta Gorda Women's Club and Red Hat Ladies. Emma was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Scott County Republican Party and served as Alderman-at-large from 1981 to 1983.

Throughout her lifetime, Emma traveled to Israel, Egypt, Greece, and Italy. In addition, she went on mission trips to Tanzania and Argentina. She also taught English in China for one summer, and then then later returned with her son and grandchildren. She often talked about climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro on her 65th birthday, and had planned to do it again on her 80th.

She is survived by her son, Charles "Chip" Borgstadt of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren, Katy Moorhouse and husband, Adam, and Jonathan Borgstadt; two great-grandchild, Avry and Lauryn Moorhouse; sisters, Margaret Boysel of Hannibal, Missouri, and Wanda White of Crawfordsville; and a brother, Harlan Orr of Muscatine.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, two sisters, Phyllis Pace and Mary Burns; and three brothers, Wayne Orr, Melvin Orr, and John Orr.
