Civil War Confederate Major General. Born in Newport, Rhode Island, he graduated from West Point in 1856 and served as an officer in the 2nd Calavry. After the start of the Civil War, he resigned his commission and was appointed a Captain on the staff of Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston. He later was promoted Colonel serving as Inspector General the staff of General Benjamin McCulloch and led 11th Virginia Cavalry at the Battle of Gettysburg. Promoted Brigadier General in late July 1863, he led a brigade in actions at Richmond and Petersburg. In August 1864, he was promoted Major General and commanded the Valley District until the Confederate surrender in April, 1865. After the war, he engaged in farming and was a cleck for the US War Department.
