CHARLES SMITH, EX-BANKER IN NEBRASKA, DIES

Charles A. Smith, 79, of 1439 Cheyenne, retired banker and insurance executive, dies Sunday after a long illness.
Mr. Smith had been a Lincoln residence since 1931. Previously he had lived in Tilden for 38 years. He was elected in 1927 as the president of the Nebraska Bankers association. He had served as an officer for banks in both Madison and Tilden.
Born in Allentown, Pa., Mr. Smith moved to Nebraska in 1876 with his family, who settled at Madison.
In 1901, Mr. Smith was elected to the directorate of the Royal Highlanders, a fraternal insurance organization. He was elected secretary-treasurer in 1931 and held the post until 1945, when he retired because of illness.
At the time of his death, Mr. Smith was the oldest member in years of service of the Mystic Tie Lodge, number 166, A.F and A.M. at Tilden. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Shrine.
Mr. Smith represented the grand lodge of Czechoslovakia in the grand lodge of Nebraska.
In 1892 Mr. Smith married Leah Koeberlin. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1942. Two of their children, Charles R. and a daughter, Leona C. Miller, preceded Mr. Smith in death.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs. V.E. Dolpher, of David City, Mrs. Verna S. Resseguie of Lincoln and Mrs. M. M. Payne of Hamburg, Iowa, a son, Leonard H. of Salina, Kas., and eleven grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Roberts, Rev. Theodore H. Leonard officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln
Memorial Park.

He lived in Tilden,Nebraska for 38 years.

His only son was Charles Richard Smith.
His only daughter was Leona C. Miller.
