It is believed, by me, that in the 1860 census, prior to the Civil War, George can be found working on a farm in Williamsburg South Carolina, where he can be found living as a bachelor with numerous other farm workers on the farm.

Found in 1870 census, Hillsboro, Marion Co.,Nichols Depot Post Office, South Carolina, as being George W. Higgins, age 30. Birthplace: South Carolina. At the time he was woring as a dry goods merchant, living with, presumedly, his 28 year old brother, John D. Huggins who was also a merchant. He did not own property, however had about $1,000 in personal property. Three years, later, in 1873, he got married.

George is listed in 1880 census Nichols, Marion Co., South Carolina as G. W. Huggins, aged 42. Birthplace: South Carolina, Head of House and married to Sallie Huggins.
