Andrew Mizell “A.M.” Burton

Businessman, Philanthropist: Reared on a farm in Trousdale County, Tennessee, and with less than two years of formal education "A.M." became a pioneer in the insurance industry and one of the nation's most generous benefactors. As a teen he helped support his family by working in the tobacco fields but eventually moved to Nashville where he found a job selling insurance. When the company he worked for went out of business he founded the Life and Casualty Insurance Company headquarterd in Nashville. For forty-eight years he was president of the company which under his leadership became one of the nation's largest. Known for his generosity it is estimated that he gave away over one hundred million dollars during his lifetime. He was instrumental in starting one of the nation's first day care centers, he supported colleges and universities across the nation and throughout the world, and he financed a project that translated a special collection of Bible Scriptures into Braille making them available to the visually impaired at no cost. At his death he was honored as one of the nation's most generous givers.
