Augustus Beardsley was born in Oakland County, Mich., May 14, 1832. When four years of age his parents moved to Cayuga county, N.Y. and he received his education at the common schools of that time. In the spring of 1851 his parents moved from Cayuga county to Portage, Livingston County, where his occupation was that of farming.
On the 29th of January, 1856, he married Mary Elizabeth Gearhart, daughter of Deacon John Gearhart, of the town of Portage. There were born unto them six children, three of whom are still living.
In October, 1862, he enlisted, leaving at home his wife with the care of a farm and three small children. In the fall of 1863, Mrs. Beardsley, with her little daughter Flora, visited him at Fort Ethan Allen, Virginia; after being there one month the little one sickened and died of cholera infantum. They took her home for burial, after which Mrs. Beardsley returned with her husband to the regiment. In the spring of 1864 the regiment was moved to the front and Mrs. Beardsley returned him.
In the spring of 1866 he went into the mercantile business with his father at East Gainesville (now Silver Springs)
In March, 1883 his wife died and on January 29th, 1884 he married Mrs. Alphonsine A. Whelpley of Auburn.
His funeral was held from the M.E. Church at Portageville on Wednesday, January 29th.
Those left to mourn his loss are his widowed companion; one son, Charles of Portageville, two daughters, Mrs. Nelllie Green of Olean, and Mrs. Stella Whipple of Buffalo; also ten grandchildren.
Interment took place in the Portageville Cemetery.
