A memorial service was held on March 15 in Redeemer Lutheran Church in Delta, with interment in Veteran's Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado in Grand Junction, Colo. Military honors were provided by Grand Valley Combined Honor Guard.
Mrs. Scherer was born on May 3,1919, in Chicago, to the late Joseph and Edith Betts Wright.
She spend her childhood and young adult life in Chicago. She graduated second in her class at Chicago College of Laboratory Technique. She worked as a laboratory technician at University of Chicago.
She was a veteran of World War II, during which she joined the U.S. Army as a WAAC. When the Army changed the name of its women's corps to WAC and issued discharge papers to the service women, she transferred to the WAVES of the U.S. Navy. During World War II, she was stationed in San Diego, Calif.
She married Raymond Bernard Scherer on July 26, 1950, in Reno, Nev. In the 1950s, she became the first national president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Air Force Association while the couple lived in California. Actor Jimmy Stewart asked her to dance at her installation as president. Mrs. Scherer, her husband and daughter, JoAnn, moved from California to Colorado in 1964, where they were residents of Delta, Colo, for 37 years. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Delta. She was also a member of the Colorado Cowbelles of Delta and Delta Women's Club and was the first president of the Pink Ladies volunteer group at Delta Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed reading, knitting, embroidery, politics and spending time with friends and family, who loved her sense of humor and warmth.
Those grateful to have shared in her life are her husband of 54 years, Raymond Bernard Scherer, of Delta, Colo., and her daughter, JoAnn Scherer-Gonzales and son-in-law, Gilberto Gonzales, of Manchester, Conn.
Mrs. Scherer was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Marjorie "Peggy" Miller and Audrey Wills.
