Harry is the son of Seiji Iwata and Mosuko Oube, Japanese immigrants. He had 8 siblings. The following was published in The Seattle Times on August 20, 2006:

Harry M. IWATA On August 1, 2006, HARRY M. IWATA, beloved husband of Margaret Y. Iwata; devoted father of Carol, Brian, and Mary Ellen Iwata; dear brother of Tom M. Iwata (Seattle), Ann Shimizu (Los Angeles) and Rose Iwata (Portland); loving grandfather of Christina Schneider and Mary Allyson Iwata. Also survived by three great-grandchildren. Born in 1920 in Spokane Washington, Harry graduated from Gonzaga University in Spokane in 1942. After serving two years in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany during World War II, he resumed his education at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio and received a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering in 1945. Harry was employed by the FMC Corporation, first in New Jersey and later in Maryland, specializing in the development of environmentally friendly insecticides. He held a number of patents and was a fellow in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Harry retired in 1982 but continued to volunteer his time to a number of organizations, including the American Heart Association and the Boy Scouts of America. He spent his retirement years fishing, gardening, and traveling extensively with his wife. A Funeral Mass was held on Monday, August 8th at St. Isaac Jogues Church, 9215 Old Harford Road. Interment was at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.
