Dr. John Joseph Crowley Jr. was born July, 1875, to John Joseph Crowley Sr and Mary Lyons, both of Ireland. Dr. Crowley met his future wife, Myrtle Margaret Dartt (1884) at Mendocino State Hospital in 1902. They married at Mission Delores Catholic Church in San Francisco, CA on Aug. 21, 1903. Their children, Rowena Mary Crowley Devine , Ruth E. Crowley and John J. (Jack)Crowley III were raised in San Francisco, as well.

Dr. Crowley attended medical school in San Francisco at Sacred Heart College. Dr. Crowley was a State of California Assemblyman in 1899 representing San Francisco. He became a State Senator to the State of California legislature in Sacramento CA, serving from 1915-1929. He owned a funeral business for a time, and was Medical Superintendent of Mendocino State Hospital from 1926-1935. At the end of his career, he became employed by the City of San Francisco Department of Public Health as a bacteriologist.

The family home was razed by fire during the San Francisco Earthquake and fire in 1906; The home they built to replace it in 1908 still stands in San Francisco.

Dr. Crowley died August 1951, three years after his wife,Myrtle M. Dartt Crowley died. They are both interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colma, CA where their daughter, Rownena and her husband Benard Devine are also interred.
