Archibald Jeremiah Bowen (b 1825 in England, d 4/22/1892, husband of Delia, father of at least Mary, Alex and William; William and Mary McIntire bought the original plot at Calvary on 2/26/1887, reburied 8/1/1939; lived at 2814 Webster St in SF at the time of death, member of St. Bridget’s parish and died of heart disease)

On the 1870 census in SF, it lists Archibald (40, b in England), occupation: rigger Stevedore, Delia (38, b in Ireland), and children who were all b in CA - Mary E (10), Alex (male, 8) and William (2). Also living in the same home is the Ford family – Thomas (30, b in Ireland, occupation: blacksmith), Catherine (30, b in Ireland), and the children al b in CA – Hannah (8), Catherine (5), Thomas (3) and William (1).

On the 1880 census in SF, it lists Archibald (53, b in England), occupation: Stevedore (a person who loads and unloads ships on a dock) living with wife, Bridget (49, b in Ireland – I believe this might have been Delia’s middle name), and daughter, Mary Bowen (20, b in CA) who is listed as single.

On many CA Great Registers, it lists his middle name as Jeremiah.

May McIntire (misspelled as McIntyre on Calvary Cemetery records, b 1883, d 1/20/1887, daughter of William E and Mary G(?) McIntire who bought the original plot at Calvary on 2/26/1887, reburied 8/1/1939; lived at 138 Chestnut St in SF at time of death, member of St. Francis parish, died of diphtheria)

Mary E BOWEN Morey (b 1861 in CA, d 10/19/1923 in CA, buried 10/22/1923)


On the 1920 census in SF, It lists Mary E Morey b in 1862 in CA. She is widowed and living with her daughter, Constance L Emmelson (32 b in CA). It lists Mary’s dad b in England, mom in Ireland. Constance is listed as a legal stenographer.

The birth year is apt to be off by a year or two since the info is from CADI and that’s a very common occurrence.

The reburials are from when Calvary Cemetery in San Francisco went defunct and they moved all burials to Holy Cross.

There is no stone for their plot. Their grave is directly to the left of the BAR stone you see here.
