B-17E Flying Fortress #41-2667 when the
aircraft failed to gain altitude on takeoff
from the airdrome at Whenuapai, Auckland,
New Zealand for a flight to Laverton, Victoria,
Australia during World War II.
All eleven aboard died when the cargo of
bombs detonated after the the plane had
impacted the ground and caught fire.
The personnel killed were:
Col. Richard E Cobb, Pilot
Capt. James R Bruce, Jr, Co-Pilot
2nd Lt. Edward H. Hoffman, Navigator
TSgt. Charles P Brunson, Crew
Sgt. Harry Cohn, Crew
TSgt. Joe F Lopez, Crew
Cpl. John R Clanton, Crew
Cpl. James Herriotts, Jr, Crew
Pvt. Curtis Childers, Crew
Lt. Edwin W Hurst, Passenger, US Navy
Capt. Jean Clovis Alexandre Gilbert, Passenger, Free French Navy (Noumea)
