At the age of 19 Edward Burlingame accompanied his father, Anson Burlingame (1820-1870 to his post in China. On their stopover in The Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) he and his father became acquainted with Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) who was there on assignment for the Sacramento Union Newspaper.

He and his father became good friends with Mark Twain and Edward continued to correspond with him after his father's death.

Graduated from Harvard.

Eventually Edward became an editor of Scribner's Magazine.
